CRB Group, the parent company of Cross River Bank, agreed to acquire Accrue on October 20, 2026. Accrue provides technology for branded digital wallets, stored value and loyalty rewards, and its founder and chief executive, Michael Hershfield, is expected to join Cross River’s leadership team after the transaction.

The deal is a vertical move inside embedded finance. Cross River already provides banking and payments infrastructure to fintech companies, while Accrue adds a customer-facing layer for holding value, distributing rewards and managing branded financial experiences. Bringing those capabilities under one organization could make it easier for partners to launch wallet programs without assembling separate banking, ledger and loyalty vendors.

The strategic rationale also comes with operational obligations. Stored-value products require clear safeguarding and redemption rules, while loyalty programs need accurate balances, expiration policies and customer-support processes. A branded wallet can look simple to the end user, but the provider must reconcile balances, handle fraud and explain which entity holds funds and is responsible when a program changes.

The transaction is subject to customary closing conditions and the announcement did not disclose financial terms. It therefore establishes an acquisition agreement, not an immediate change to every Cross River partner’s product. The value will depend on whether the combined platform improves launch speed and economics without increasing compliance or operational complexity.

The acquisition reflects a broader infrastructure trend: banks are buying or partnering for the software layers that make financial products visible to consumers. Cross River’s challenge will be to preserve the discipline of a regulated bank while giving partners the flexible wallet and rewards tools associated with fintech platforms.
