Fifth Third Bank launched Fifth Third Innovation Banking on October 1, 2026, a new venture-banking platform built around the Tech and Life Sciences franchise it inherited from its earlier-2026 merger with Comerica. That franchise, which Comerica had operated for 34 years before the merger, specialized in banking relationships with venture-backed startups and life-sciences companies — a segment of commercial banking that requires different underwriting and relationship models than traditional small-business lending.

The new platform pairs that venture-banking franchise with Newline, Fifth Third’s existing embedded-banking and payments infrastructure, which the bank markets separately to fintechs and platforms that want to embed banking features into their own products. Combining the two gives Fifth Third Innovation Banking customers access to treasury management, lending and wealth-management services alongside the venture-specific relationship banking Comerica’s franchise was known for.

Fifth Third has framed the launch as a significant growth opportunity, describing it as representing a potential $10 billion multi-year deposit-growth opportunity for the bank. The move reflects a broader pattern among regional banks of using mergers to acquire specialized lending franchises — in this case, a life-sciences and venture-banking book of business — rather than building that expertise internally, and then layering their own technology infrastructure on top to compete for a customer segment traditionally dominated by banks like Silicon Valley Bank’s successor entities and First Citizens.
