Gemini receives Singapore’s major payment institution license for token services
The Monetary Authority of Singapore license covers digital payment token and cross-border money-transfer services, moving Gemini beyond its earlier in-principle approval status.

Gemini Digital Payments Singapore has received a Major Payment Institution license from the Monetary Authority of Singapore, moving the crypto company from an earlier in-principle approval status to an active license. The authorization covers digital payment token services and cross-border money-transfer services, giving Gemini a regulated base from which to provide those activities in Singapore.
The distinction between in-principle approval and a full license is important in a tightly regulated digital-asset market. An in-principle approval signals that a regulator is prepared to grant permission once outstanding conditions are met; an active Major Payment Institution license means the entity has completed that process and can operate within the permissions and obligations of the Payment Services Act framework. It does not mean every Gemini product is automatically approved or that the company can ignore ongoing compliance requirements.
The MPI designation also removes the transaction-volume caps that generally apply to standard payment institutions. That gives Gemini more room to scale digital-token and cross-border-transfer activity if customer demand develops, while leaving the company responsible for anti-money-laundering controls, technology risk management, customer-protection requirements and the other obligations attached to the license.
Singapore has become an important testing ground for institutional digital-asset infrastructure because its licensing framework offers a clearer route than many markets, but it is not a blanket endorsement of crypto speculation. Gemini’s license is a permission to conduct defined payment services under supervision. The commercial question now is whether the company can turn that regulatory access into sustainable institutional and customer activity while maintaining the controls that made the approval possible.
