Huntington Bancshares trims 2027 profit outlook, citing rates and loan-growth pressure
The regional bank revised its 2027 earnings-per-share guidance down to a range of $1.75 to $1.83 at a September 16, 2026 investor conference, pointing to a more difficult rate environment and softer growth in commercial real estate, mortgages and auto lending.

Huntington Bancshares revised its 2027 earnings-per-share guidance down to a range of $1.75 to $1.83 on September 16, 2026, during a presentation at the Barclays Global Financial Services Conference. The Columbus, Ohio-based regional bank, one of the larger super-regional lenders in the U.S. Midwest, pointed to a tougher interest-rate backdrop and rising competition as the main drivers behind the lowered outlook.
Management also flagged softer growth expectations across three specific lending categories: commercial real estate, residential mortgages and indirect auto loans. Those are three of the loan categories most sensitive to both interest-rate levels and broader economic conditions — commercial real estate in particular has been an area of scrutiny across the regional banking sector in recent years as higher rates weighed on property valuations and refinancing activity.
On the revenue side, Huntington said it expects a roughly flat net interest margin path — the spread between what a bank earns on loans and investments versus what it pays on deposits — rather than the kind of expansion that would help offset softer loan growth. To manage the gap between slower growth and margin pressure, management said it plans to continue an expense-reengineering program aimed at controlling costs elsewhere in the business.
The guidance revision is a data point in a broader theme running through 2026 regional-bank commentary: even lenders with solid recent loan and deposit growth, as Huntington reported alongside the guidance cut, are tempering multi-year profit expectations as they navigate a rate environment that has proven less favorable than earlier forecasts assumed, alongside stiffer competition for both loans and deposits from banks and non-bank lenders alike.
