SBI Holdings and Startale join Open Standard to explore yen-dollar stablecoin interoperability

The companies plan to pilot interoperability between JPYSC, issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank, and Open USD; the announcement describes a proposed pilot, not a live commercial service.

SBI Holdings and Startale Group joined the Open Standard alliance on October 16, 2026, announcing plans to explore interoperability between JPYSC and Open USD. JPYSC is a yen-denominated trust-type stablecoin issued by SBI Shinsei Trust Bank, while Open USD is the dollar-denominated stablecoin associated with the alliance.

The proposed pilot is aimed at real-time, on-chain settlement between the yen and U.S. dollar ecosystems. Interoperability is a different problem from issuing a token: the systems must agree on how assets are represented, how conversion is authorized, how reserves and redemption are handled, and how transactions are monitored for sanctions and other compliance requirements.

For SBI, the initiative fits a broader effort to build digital-asset infrastructure around the yen. For Startale, joining the alliance provides a route to test how a public blockchain and a stablecoin standard could connect currencies that are normally separated by banking hours, correspondent accounts and foreign-exchange processes. Neither objective guarantees that the proposed rail will be cheaper or faster at commercial scale.

The announcement is careful about its status. The companies said they intend to explore a pilot; it does not establish that users can exchange JPYSC and Open USD today or that a new payment product has launched. Any future service would still need to operate within the relevant Japanese and international regulatory, custody and consumer-protection frameworks.

The significance is therefore architectural rather than transactional. A yen-dollar connection could give institutions another settlement option if the pilot works, but the hard questions are reserve transparency, legal claims, liquidity, reversibility and control of the interfaces between the two stablecoins. Those details will determine whether interoperability becomes useful infrastructure or remains a demonstration.
