Brite began a phased UK rollout of its Pay by Bank service on September 29, 2026, following authorization by the Financial Conduct Authority as an electronic money institution. The Swedish payments company is using the authorization to expand account-to-account checkout for UK merchants, moving money directly from a customer’s bank account rather than through a card network.

The model can appeal to merchants because it may reduce card-related costs and give customers a familiar bank-authentication flow. It also changes the operating questions. A successful checkout depends on open-banking connectivity, bank coverage, consent, fraud controls and confirmation that funds have actually settled. Merchants need clear processes for refunds, failed payments, duplicate instructions and customer disputes.

Brite said the rollout would be phased. The launch materials reviewed for this article did not identify a complete list of live merchant partners or a detailed implementation timetable, so the announcement should not be read as universal UK availability. Authorization provides the regulatory foundation; distribution and usage will determine whether the service becomes a material alternative to cards.

Pay by Bank remains a two-sided network product. Consumers need a fast and trustworthy bank-redirect experience, while merchants need high conversion and predictable reconciliation. A service that is cheaper per successful payment can still be unattractive if customers abandon the flow, if refunds are cumbersome or if the merchant has to reconcile multiple bank-confirmation states manually.

Brite’s UK expansion is therefore a test of account-to-account payments beyond the pilot stage. The company has the regulatory permission and a rollout plan; the next evidence will be merchant adoption, repeat consumer use and the reliability of settlement and exception handling.
