The integration lets customers authorize recurring debits from OPay wallets after a one-time enrollment, opening a local-wallet route for merchants selling subscriptions.

EBANX launched OPay Recurring payments in Nigeria on October 22, 2026, giving subscription merchants a way to debit customers’ OPay wallets after a one-time authorization. The customer enrolls inside the OPay mobile app, then permits recurring or variable payments without repeating the full authorization flow for every billing event.

The product addresses a practical problem in subscription commerce: a merchant can have demand for a recurring service but lack a card-on-file relationship with the customer. A local wallet can provide the stored-value account and familiar authentication, while EBANX handles the payment-method integration for merchants operating through its platform.

The integration is for naira transactions and uses the opay-recurring payment-method code. EBANX says merchants should present it as a standalone option at checkout and contact its integration specialists for the official OPay branding guidelines. Those implementation details matter because recurring authorization must be clear enough for customers to understand the amount, frequency and cancellation path.

Recurring payments also create obligations beyond the initial enrollment. Merchants need to handle failed debits, insufficient wallet balances, refunds, cancellations and customer complaints. Consumers should be able to see which merchant has authorization and how to revoke it. A one-time consent flow reduces friction, but it should not make future debits invisible.

The launch gives subscription businesses another route into Nigeria’s digital-payments ecosystem. Its commercial test will be repeat-payment success, customer retention and dispute handling — not simply whether a wallet can be connected to a checkout page.
